Per Kirkebypainter, sculptor, graphic artist

Per Kirkeby - one of the outstanding European artists and the most important representative of Danish contemporary art - studied geology in Copenhagen from 1957 to 1964 and graduated with a doctorate. He undertook expeditions to Greenland as well as to the Arctic and traveled to Central America to explore Mayan culture.

His experiences as a geologist are reflected most vividly in his work and are even present in the work process. Although Per Kirkeby is a trained natural scientist, he sees himself primarily as a painter: "I am a painter who paints with his instinct and is always seduced by the painting process and by his hands, brush and all."

In Wedel, Kirkeby's large-scale paintings as well as his sculptural works were on display.
