With the words "There is in fact no such thing as art for art's sake, art that stands above classes, art that is detached from or independent of politics" Mao Zedong had banished any kind of individual artistic expression as petty-bourgeois and decadent in his famous Yenan speech in 1942. After the end of the Cultural Revolution and China's cautious opening, it is the visual artists in particular, along with the writers, who are striving for autonomy and independent forms of expression.
