Friedensreich Hundertwasser

The work of Friedensreich Regentag Dunkelbunt Hundertwasser (1928 - 2000) is known for its bright colors, round building shapes, uneven windows, colorful ceramic columns and green roof surfaces. The artist's characteristic language of color and form reflects his message of living in harmony with nature. Together with the pursuit of individual artistic design in all areas of life, this forms the core of his art. Against the "geometricized" world of straight lines and right angles, he set the organic, the natural form. He countered grey with powerful and vibrant colors, silver and shiny gold.

His thematization of social and ecological issues is astonishingly topical: "Today, when the foundations of our existence are being lost, when we have changed the foundations of our existence, the climate, vegetation and animal world to such an extent that we are facing the greatest ecological crisis mankind has ever had, when we accept prefabricated things, sterile architecture and poisonous food without revolting because our minds and bodies seem to have become accustomed to these poisons, it is of eminent importance to us all that there are people who think differently and act differently and want to live differently" he wrote as early as 1981.

Our collection of around 150 works shows the artistic development of this exceptional artist from the early 1950s to the end of his life.
